What’s in a Name?

A few months ago I moved to the Lincolnshire Fens after falling in love with the area last year, whilst house hunting and soul searching. I had previously taught yoga and ran a small wellness-focused practice in North West England, as well as a series of popular day retreats for overall wellbeing and self-care.
Fen Elder Flow - What's in a Name

I was thrilled to move to the Fens and plan my business relaunch here, and needed a new business name which would reflect my business aim and my new home. The name of Fen Elder Flow came to me one night, whilst walking in the garden, just listening to the birds and the light breeze flowing through the trees. The Elder tree has always been a favourite of mine; like many plants and trees, its surrounded by myth and legend, and in certain parts of the world, has been connected with magic. In earlier times it was seen as sacred to certain cultures and belief systems. It can be seen to represent wisdom. I wished to offer a business which could suit people of more mature years – particularly the ‘curious to try’ beginners who may have felt that yoga classes could be a bit intimidating to them as a first timer, concerned about being surrounded by a younger and more experienced crowd. I welcome everyone at my classes, but these are the ‘elders’ of our community, the men and women with life wisdom and experience, that I wish to reach out to in particular and to have the confidence of being included on the mat with me.

I have practiced yoga now for several years, and experienced first-hand the joy it can bring to one’s life at so many levels – not only in helping to improve one’s physical health, but also supporting emotional wellbeing as well. After a few years of practice, I decided to deepen my own yoga studies to teacher level whilst in my 60s- and know first-hand that even someone in their later years can start to embrace yoga as part of their daily life and benefit so very much from it.

Fen Elder Flow - Flight of Fancy

Flight of Fancy

I feel privileged to live in the Lincolnshire Fens; I am surrounded by farmland, wildlife and big skies. I feel I have best of both worlds here, easy striking distance to towns and amenities but it also affords me the peace and solitude I have craved for some time which I enjoyed several years ago living in the Scottish Highlands. Most days I can observe small herds of deer on one of our local walks, and when the winter wind is still, I can hear the call of birds claiming territory or sounding out a warning cry as I walk past.

Fen Elder Flow - Ahimsa

Ahimsa

We often just think of ‘Ahimsa’ – the first of the Yamas – as being mainly the discipline of non-violence towards others – violence not just being the physical – but also tone of voice – a voice raised in anger, a thought which gives off a certain ‘vibe’. For example, practicing Ahimsa means that if someone is nasty or aggressive to us, we need to let those words flow past us and not react unkindly – but sometimes our egos get in the way and perhaps we don’t want to be seen as the weaker person by not fighting back!
