I first became interested in yoga over 30 years ago; I always had an interest in spiritual and health matters especially if linked to ancient history – although at times ‘life’ seemed to get in the way of following a regular regime. However, I felt a calling to yoga.
My first major experience of yoga was at an adult ‘night school’ class in West Lancashire, and I was ‘hooked’. I stayed with that same teacher for two years before a relocation to Scotland. At class, I was guided into the postures, I started to understand the reasons for certain sequences and her hatha style was encouraging, warm and welcoming.
I had never experienced Savasana before, and still remember the beautiful long guided relaxation sessions at the end of class – an early experience of mindfulness and an achievement to get me to lie still for that length of time!
At that time I was in a highly pressured job and not happy – but at the end of class I would feel less ‘broken’, stronger and a sense of being more at peace with myself.
After a return to North West England, I returned to a regular yoga class – with a teacher who was also gentle and encouraging and who carefully watched to help with adjustments, showing how to develop each asana according to ability and experience. From a stiff and body-reluctant start to class I developed a practice that embraced most asanas both in class and in my home practice, knowing how to make adjustments to help me ease into the postures.
I wanted to deepen my knowledge of yoga philosophy, growing a deep desire to bring the benefits and joy of yoga to others, and so studied for my 200 hours Yoga Teacher Training qualification in 2019, followed by an additional 300 hours in 2022.
I now can teach a variety of yoga styles, including chair yoga, yin yoga, yoga nidra, and I qualified as a Menopause Yoga Teacher in 2024.
I will be delighted if you can join me in class.
